Shields provide a regenerating layer of protection. They absorb a percetage of the incoming damage, and by doing that their strength is eaten away. They regenerate that strength at a given rate.
Most shields offer close to 100% protection, but do not reach it. The Strong variant does offer 100%
The single use version has the specialized capacitors for shield generation, but does not have recharge circuitry, so it cannot be recharged in-flight. But it is stronger than what’s typical for their slot size class, and very light. It can be recharged with special equipment at stations.
Shield types:
- Generic - balanced recharge rate, 100% damage reduction, mediocre strength
- Strong - slower recharge rate, but more strength
- Fast - faster recharge rate, but less strength
- Cheap - optimized for price, all stats are bad, quite light
- Light - optimized for mass, but still a good choice overall. Slight reduction in damage reduction
- Disposable - Optimized for protection while keeping a very very good price and mass. Does not recharge (or maybe rechargable at stations).
- Could provide a cheap option for those who only need or want to go into combat occasionally, or don’t yet have the money for a proper shield.
- Provides above the slot size protection. Not one size plus level, but around halfway.
- If they are station-rechargable, the recharging would cost money (renting economy, apt for Haber and Tolan)
- Could be turned on and off to conserve integrity
